Hi, everyone!
Welcome to my blog! I just want to start out by saying that I have NEVER blogged before in my life, and it is a little daunting! I will also say, it reminds me of the movie Easy A, which I highly recommend if you have never seen it! If you want to learn more about it, you can click this link to the IMDb page for the movie.
Anyway, my name is Ashley Shaw and I am a math teacher (and Freshman B Volleyball Coach) at East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, Illinois. I grew up in Elmwood Park, which is a quick seven minute drive from East Leyden, but I currently live in Palatine. I got my bachelor's degree in secondary education/math from Illinois State University. I also have two master's degrees from Concordia University in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Technology. Additionally, I have an EL and Special Education endorsement.
In my spare time I love to travel, spend time with friends and family, take walks, listen to audiobooks and podcasts, and go to trivia with my friends! Below I have included a picture of my friend/co-teacher, Anthony, me, and my other friend/co-worker Jen at a ceramics class from the summer. The other photo is of my trivia team.

In my classroom technology is an integral part of my lessons. Students in my school are one-to-one, and we use their Chromebooks on a regular basis. In most of my classes I have a flipped classroom, and I have created videos that my students watch every night through EdPuzzle. I enjoy being able to see what my students have done, and interact with them in a private and individual manner through EdPuzzle. Additionally, as a math teacher, I use Desmos.com constantly! It is by far my favorite piece of technology! It is a free, online, graphing calculator. That allows me to create interactive activities and it allows my students to graph, make tables, and so much more! I will definitely be highlighting this tool very soon!
Thanks!
Hi! I want to start off by saying Easy A is one of my favorite movies ever! I love that you referenced that. My favorite part is when the whole family is together because the parents are so goofy with her and her younger brother. I love to travel too! Have you gone anywhere super fun or amazing?? My family and I went to Amsterdam last Christmas and it was my favorite place ever. I grew up so close to in Franklin Park! I am from Park Ridge so just a quick 20 minute drive. I know exactly where East Leyden is. How cool that you used to live so close! I remember having a desktop computer, it was so fun but so annoying when you had to wait for the dial tone to connect to the internet! I wonder what kids now a days would think about the dial tone part. I have not used EdPuzzle so thanks for mentioning it, I will definitely have to give it a try and try to use it with my students. Your gif that you sent definitely describes this school year for me.. I feel like I need to just take a deep breath with everything that is happening around me! Thanks so much for sharing, I really enjoyed your blog and getting to know all about you.
ReplyDeleteYou are off to a fantastic start, Ashley! Ah, education is such a small world. I attended East Leyden and grew up in River Grove :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fantastic intro to who you are. I'm looking forward to exploring technology together this fall.
Wow! That's crazy! I grew up in Elmwood Park, so I'm super familiar with River Grove, too!
DeleteHello, Again Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed with all your degrees. That is insane. Do you aspire to transition out of the classroom one day?
I liked reading your post and thank you for sharing those pictures, it seems like there is a lot of fun going on and always learning moments within your life. As a millennial myself, I can honestly say that technology is my acquaintance, I am not its friend usually and I only really use it when necessary.
I really appreciate that you are able to intertwine technology within your math lessons. When I teach math, I find technology to be hard to implement because I am a sucker for messy math. Show me what you did, cross it out, and don’t erase. I love seeing equations being solved, but more than that I love seeing what strategy students used to solve it. I think in a previous course I was introduced to Desmos.
Overwhelmed? Me too. Once we get in the swing of things, it will be second nature and the next almost eight weeks will fly by! Thanks for being authentic in your post. It was my first time sharing on a platform in what seemed like ages. Good luck in this course and I look forward to learning together.
